Edmonton Oilers: Will Jussi Jokinen Have Powerful Impact?

To add more depth on the wing, the Edmonton Oilers signed veteran Jussi Jokinen to a low-risk one-year contract earlier this offseason. With his proven ability and impressive resume, Jokinen is expected to bring depth and experience to the Oilers lineup. However, many are curious to see as to what kind of impact he has […] Edmonton Oilers: Will Jussi Jokinen Have Powerful Impact?

Edmonton Oilers Prospects Profiles: Ostap Safin

Edmonton Oilers prospect Ostap Safin has what it takes to be a productive NHL player during the team’s Stanley Cup window. Safin was projected to be a second-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft by most of the NHL scouting agencies but fell to the fourth round. Edmonton Oilers: Nick Ellis Ready for Bigger Role

To ensure my goaltending depth as Cam Talbot took over the starting role and Laurent Brossoit headed to the NHL, the Edmonton Oilers signed NCAA free agent Nick Ellis to an entry-level deal last season. The Millersville, Maryland native came to light after a breakout 2015-16 campaign. Prior to the year, Ellis wasn’t a standout […] Edmonton Oilers: Nick Ellis Ready for Bigger Rol

The Edmonton Oilers got away with a bad gamble on Jonas Gustavsson

2016-17 Edmonton Oilers: No. 50 G Jonas Gustavsson The career of Edmonton Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli makes it clear that he considers the backup goalie position a place where he can save some cap space. It’s an approach that has worked fairly well for him over the years. In Boston players such as Anton Khudobin,...

RE 17-18 PATRICK MAROON: NO WAY BACK

Although there is plenty of competition, I think the best Peter Chiarelli trade in terms of value gap is the Patrick Maroon deal. For the cost of defender Martin Gernat and a fourth-round pick (Jack Kopacka)—this is not a high price—Edmonton received a big forward with soft hands and an ability to think the game with Connor McDavid. That’s a brilliant trade. (No Way Back) PATRICK MAROON 2016-17 5×5 points

Monday Musings: Money Talks

Much of the NHL off-season discussion focuses on contracts. Leon Draisaitl is the only Oiler in need of a new deal. He’ll eventually sign, but we are all curious to see for how long and how much. Ideally, both sides will reach an agreement before the preseason is over, so Draisaitl isn’t playing from behind when...

UNE QUESTION, UNE RESPONSE

I learned a lot in my youth from CBC French. The television network that provided semi-nudity on Sunday mornings (honestly, English kids were getting Hymn Sing!) also gave me Expos baseball. My recollection of the phrases (“curcuit!” for home run, “la chandelle” for pop fly) is probably wrong, as chandelle is candle, but  I swear that’s what they said in 1971. One of my favorite features was called “Une Question, Une Response” because I could try to make out the words.

Over at Sportsnet, they caught up with Ron MacLean at Smashfest where he gave his take on a range of NHL topics, including Connor McDavid being underpaid. If there’s one thing that Ron MacLean has seen in his day it’s a lot of great NHL talent and I’m going to put words in his mouth and guess...

Will Peter Chiarelli's harshest critics get it wrong two years in a row?

Rating Peter Chiarelli, Part 3 Corsi analysts savaged Chiarelli for the Hall-Larsson trade and aren’t much happier this summer. But are they right this time? Peter Chiarelli was absolutely roasted by hockey commentators, bloggers and Oilers fans last summer after he traded Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson. This summer? Not so much. Most Oilers fans are willing to give the benefit of the doubt to Chiarelli, if not outright praise. Chiarelli did, after all, put to
